History

The following article is an exert from a International Paper EMBA (Employee Mutual Benifit Asc.) news letter from the Hudson River Mill, Corinth, New York, volume XX, April of 1963

"BROOKHAVEN GOLF CLUB TO OPEN THIS SPRING AT THE E.M.B.A.'s O.B. BEYER RECREATION PARK."

Edward V. McKenna, President of Hudson River Mill Chapter of the Employeees' Mutual Benifit Association, has announced that Brookhaven Golf Club will open this Spring. It is part of the O. B. Beyer Recreation Park which is located about one half mile southwest of South Corinth on the North and South sides of Bracket Road (now Alpine Meadows Rd.) in the Townships of Corinth and Greenfield Center.

The Golf Club, which is one of a number of facilities to be devolped as time and means permit, will open as a 9-hole course comprising 3,232 yards with a par of 36. This will be known as the White Course. From the Red Tees the course will measure 2,727 yards with a par of 36. Season's Fees for the E.M.B.A. and Community will be $45.00. Greens Fees will be $2.00 daily and $2.50 weekends and holidays.

The O.B. Beyer Recreation Park comprises 370 acres of land formerly owned by Mr. Earl Towers,Sr. and Mrs. Raymond Towers. It was purchased in the fall of 1960 for the purpose of developing a recreational area for the employees of Hudson River Mill as well as the residents of the community. Present plans include the expansion to an 18 hole golf course, a picinic area, playground and swimming pool. The park is so named in recognition of the assistance given the EMBA by the former mill manager, now retired.

In order to purchase the property it was necessary to form a corporation known as the O.B. Beyer Recreation Park, Inc. Six of the seven Board of Directors serving are also officers of the EMBA. They are Albert Oettken, Mill Manager; Edward McKenna, EMBA President; H. Edwards, President of the Corporation; R.P. Beaudette; William Burmester, Harold Bush and Robert St, Lawrence. O.B. Beyer, ritired Mill Manager, and M.W. Stewart, retired Mill Agent, have been appointed by the Board as permanent members of the Techinical Advisory Committee
With regard to other activities, Mr. Gerard Pesez, Manager of our Northern Woodlands Division, Glens Falls, has already given considerable assistance toward layout and construction of a picinic area. Also a 28 station archery range has been staked out by the Archery Club and two foundations for a skeet range have been poured by the Skeet Club.
